Our History
Fulton Reformed Presbyterian Church (FRPC) was planted in 1994 through the efforts of our sister congregation in Oswego. For over thirty years, the Lord has established, preserved, and strengthened FRPC to be a Gospel beacon in the city of Fulton. As members of a larger denomination, the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America, we share a rich heritage which dates back to 17th-century Scotland, a chapter of church history characterized by extensive and precise Biblical and theological understanding. The legacy we inherited from our forefathers includes a sincere love for God as He has truly revealed Himself through the Holy Scriptures. This is evidenced through our worship of Him and how we live our lives as Christians, to His praise and glory.
Our Beliefs
We believe that our chief purpose is to give glory to our triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is the Creator of all things and the Savior of His people, so it is our aim to serve and worship Him in a way that is pleasing to Him and in keeping with His Word.
The Scriptures
We believe that the Word of God is exactly that – the inerrant, infallible truth of God which He has given to us (2 Tim. 3:16-17). The Scriptures are our rule of faith and life, telling us what we are to believe and showing us how we are to live. They set before us our inability to save ourselves from our sin and reveal to us the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ – all who repent of their sin and believe in Him will be saved (John 3:16). The Lord uses His Word to bring souls to faith and also to increase our faith (Rom. 10:17).
Our Standards
We are a reformed church, which means that we hold to the system of doctrine upheld and defended during the Reformation in Europe in the 16th Century. This system of doctrine has been set down in the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Larger and Shorter Catechisms, compiled by the Westminster Assembly in the mid-17th century. We hold to these documents as our creed, or subordinate standard. We also adhere to the Testimony of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America, which is our continuing application of God’s Word to the church and the world in the present day. Holding to these standards means we are a confessional church, whereby we believe it is crucial, for the sake of truth and unity, to set down clear statements of our system of doctrine, with support from the Scriptures.
Our Governance
The Lord Jesus is the sole Head of His church (Col. 1:18) and the Great Shepherd of His Sheep (Heb. 13:20). As a presbyterian church, we believe Christ calls men to serve as elders (or ‘presbyters’/’overseers’), under His authority, to care for the spiritual needs of the church. These men serve together as a ‘Session’ wherein there is always plurality (more than one elder) and parity (equal authority between the elders). Our elders also represent the congregation at the higher, broader court of Presbytery, and at the highest court of Synod. In addition to elders, we also have deacons whom the Lord raises up to care for the material needs of the church. Our Book of Church Government more fully explains our form of government.
Our Worship
As the Scriptures are our rule of faith and life, this means they are the rule of how we worship God. Our worship services each Lord’s Day are centered around the Word of God as it is read and preached. We also sing from the Word, in the Book of Psalms, and do so without the use of musical instruments, which we believe is in keeping with the New Testament Church’s directive for heart worship (Col. 3:16 and Eph. 5:17-19). As the worship of God is at the heart of the Christian life, so too it is at the heart of our life as a congregation. Our Directory of Public Worship more fully explains our worship practices.
