Get in the Word

To stir up the church to read the Scripture

in order to grow in grace and knowledge of Christ.

1Th 2:13  And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.  (ESV)

I.) Without Scripture darkness

Imagine life without Scripture

Rom 1:21, Eph 4:18 1Th 5:4

Psalm 119:105, Prov 6:23, 2 Peter 1:19, 2 Cor 4:6

II.) Everything dependent upon Scripture

Taste and see that the Lord is good 1 Pet 2:2

Peter says desire the milk if you have tasted that the Lord is good.   The milk is the word, and he        says if you have tasted the goodness of God in the word, then drink more of it.

Transformed by beholding 2 Cor 3:18

The Spirit transforms us as we behold the glory of God in the Scripture.  This gives us further insight into what Jesus asked in John 17:17.

Scripture must enter the mind and be understood.  It does not help to listen to the Bible while we sleep.  It yields no growth if we are not paying attention when we are reading or hearing the word of God.  Only that which is understood brings profit.   Paul says that the word not understood does not profit.

This can be shown in 1 Cor 14.

III.) Practical Application – getting into the Word.

Methods of hearing – reading, audio, sermons, books

Bible reading plans – Bible in a year “The One Year Bible”

Bible on CD/MP3 – Table of times – whole Bible is about 66 hrs long or 2.7 days, roughly then, at 30 min. a day one could listen to the entire Bible 3 times a year         at an hour a day it could be 6 times a year. 10 min/day once a year.
